Nationwide Action of Global Scope
In the Flagship Action PRO-sCAP, the following institutions participate: the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the University of Crete, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, the Biomedical Research Foundation "Alexander Fleming", the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), and the "Athena" Research Center. Additionally, a large number of University Hospitals are involved. More than 70 scientists from these institutions will be called upon to study the mechanisms behind the development of severe respiratory infections and their complications with the aim of early prevention and improved treatment. This collaboration forms one of the most comprehensive research teams for this disease on a global scale.
The project coordinator is Dr. Meletios Athanasios Dimopoulos, Professor of Hematology-Oncology and Director of the Therapeutic Clinic at the Medical School of NKUA. The scientific leads are Dr. Georgios Hamilos, Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis at the Medical School of the University of Crete, and Dr. Aristides Eliopoulos, Professor of Biology & Genetics and Director of the Biology Laboratory at the Medical School of NKUA.
